grown up

Lipstick and shadow on,
you laughed lightly, anxious
eyes locked on your reflection.

With one last pat, you turned,
Gotta go, wish me luck.
Butterfly kiss on my cheek.

Creaking footsteps on the stairs,
You ain’t never gon’ have
nobody. Fool still … won’t change.

Words wounding worse than strikes
your breath stopped and back tensed.
Whips opened girlhood scars
scabbed-over, never healed.

Tears rolled down your cheek,
hidden from all but me.

Our ritual born that night:
heavy flakes of dandruff.
gently displaced from rest.
Tiny hands try to brush
away hurt, braid in care.

i saw then you knew pain:
mothers, like daughters, cry.
